Wellness Program Receives National Recognition PETERBOROUGH, N.H. -- On November 17, 2006, representatives from Monadnock Community Hospital's Bond Wellness Center were honored as invited speakers at the Medical Fitness Association's 12th annual conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Over 2,000 participants attended the conference, described by MFA organizers as "The most successful event in the history of the organization." Billed primarily as a national event, this year's conference featured international representation, including a delegation from China's Health Ministry. Co-presenters, Barbara Dalrymple, RN, BS, Phil McFarland and Melanie Wagner, PT presented a 1 1/2 hour seminar on the Center's newly developed program entitled The Heart Smart Program. This pioneering program accepts those individuals with impaired functional capacity and endurance associated with heart disorders, as well as those with a high risk for developing heart disease; which is a previously underserved population. Unique in scope, Heart Smart is covered by insurance and enables a broader population of participants with chronic disease to benefit from a health education series and individualized exercise program prescribed by a physical therapist. Philip Waterman, medical rehab program graduate and Bond Wellness Center member describes it best, " In concert with the individual's goals, a personal rehabilitation program is created that takes into account many factors, but with one common goal, to achieve the highest individual quality of life possible. Avoiding future illness is part of the quality of life; it comes from both physical training and from education. Merely surviving is not the goal; it is regaining the ability to lead a normal life." |
